Remodeling can be fun. Like completing a challenging puzzle, I enjoy the process of making the pieces fit. I believe that design solutions should be seamless, as if a remodel or addition appears that it has always been a part of the home. With imagination, problem-solving skills, and technical knowledge, I create aesthetically pleasing and harmonious projects.
Most importantly, my focus is on designing spaces that reflect my client’s needs and desires. I believe design should be a combination of the client’s lifestyle, needs, tastes, and budget. In remodeling, I take the existing style of the home into consideration - from the traffic flow and sightlines to the structure and architectural design. The same is true for a custom home and the site that it sits on. I can work with any style of home, from traditional to contemporary. Our collaboration will result in a set of plans for architectural design of your new space or home.
Typically, I don’t recommend specific interior materials, colors, and selections, but I do work with a collaboration of professionals who can work with you on this level of detail. Depending on a client’s time and budget, the process can vary from simple drawings to an in-depth design project with the assistance of interior designers, structural engineers, and others within the trade. It is simply up to you as to how much detail is part of your project and included in your plans.
Even after the drawings are complete and you are working with a builder, there may be some changes and "tweaks" you will make to the design with your builder. Don't worry; my architectural ego will not interfere. Modifications and changes are a natural part of the construction process, especially when remodeling within existing conditions.
Who Is Pitzen Design?
Working with a collaboration of trade professionals, I have owned and operated Pitzen Design since 1999. A Licensed Architect and Certified Remodeler, I specialize in architectural design for residential remodeling and custom homes. My expertise includes additions, exterior and interior remodels, kitchens, bathroom suites, lower levels, master suites, family rooms, sunrooms, and in-law suites - every space in the home. I specialize in large, complex remodels and custom homes, as well as whole house remodels.
My father noticed my talent for architectural design at an early age. When I was a young boy, I made sandwiches built within precise specifications, with great attention to detail, and everything in its place. My father, after witnessing these creations, commented that I was going to be an architect when I grew up. A graduate of Sheboygan North High School, I easily transferred those sandwich skills to my courses at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, receiving my bachelor of science in architectural studies in 1989.
I began my career in commercial architecture while still in college, building a model for Uihlein Architects, after the company saw the level of detail and craftsmanship I put into my college projects.
After graduating from college, I worked at Kahler Slater, creating presentation models, CAD working drawings, and eventually becoming a project architect. After several years of working on commercial projects, I realized commercial architecture was not my true calling. I began to pursue a career in residential remodeling, working in design and sales for S.A. Klapperich Remodeling and later, JDJ Builders.
My wife, Sharon, and I had our first child in 1999, and I became Mr. Mom. Also born that day in May was my business, Pitzen Design. Three children, and more than a decade later, Pitzen Design (and my family) continues to flourish. They both are my passion and receive my full devotion.

Why Choose Pitzen Design?
What makes Pitzen Design unique from many other architectural design companies? I listen to my clients and design what they want - not what I want. I can help you realize your vision and design a home that meets your needs… and is an extension of your lifestyle.
I am extremely detailed and thorough, building on my 20+ years of experience. As a Licensed Architect and Certified Remodeler, I am intimately involved with the industry, belonging to numerous associations and collaborating closely with trade professionals. Continued education keeps me current on code issues, trends, techniques, and materials, allowing me to provide professional architectural services to my clients. All of these skills allow me to design and interpret a seamless space that is best for you.
Building trust and a successful architect/client relationship is very important to me. I want you to have the best design possible for your home and feel comfortable to change your mind throughout the course of the design. Time taken with the design process is time well-spent, resulting in a better project and potentially fewer added costs in the long run.
